ROAD TO RIAT: BLAST OFF STEM CHALLENGE

3...2...1...BLAST OFF! Road to RIAT: Blast off is back for a second year and it’s bigger and better than ever! This fully funded programme invites state secondary school students (aged 11-14) to join us on a journey in space exploration for the remainder of the academic year.

WHAT IS ROAD TO RIAT: BLAST OFF?

Road to RIAT: Blast Off is a four-stage STEM programme that invites secondary school students aged 11-14 to explore the wonders of space through a series of engaging activities delivered virtually and face-to-face.

THE COMPETITION LAUNCH

Students will begin their journey by joining our virtual livestream where they will learn more about the space-themed competition they will be participating in.

In teams of 4, they will submit their entry and compete with other schools across the country. We'll provide materials for student research, support for teachers, and assistance throughout the competition.

STEM DAY CHALLENGE

Following on from the competition launch, 60 state schools within Scotland, Northwest England, North East England, East Midlands, West Midlands and South West England will then participate in a face-to-face STEM day, delivered by The Smallpeice Trust.

Students will become space explorers for the day and will discover the RAF’s role in space exploration. During the STEM day, students will learn about forced and the impact of drag as they navigate through a series of challenges, including designing and building their own prototypes, developing their teamwork, critical thinking and creativity skills.

WINNERS WILL ATTEND THE ROYAL INTERNATIONAL AIR TATTOO!

The Regional Winners of the space competition, who have also participated in the STEM day will receive £100 for their school. PLUS, they will be invited to join us at The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) and compete in another space-themed STEM challenge against other schools.

The National Winner will win TWO Lego Spike Prime Kits for their school.
