World Space Week 2024: The Smallpeice Trust explores the possibilities of Human Habitation on Mars

World Space Week (4th – 10th October 2023) is the largest annual space event in the world, founded by the United Nations General Assembly back in December 1999. It is officially defined as “an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition.”

At the end of August, The Smallpeice Trust successfully delivered our ‘Human Habitat on Mars’ virtual course, which provided 50 talented Year 10 students with an unforgettable experience.

The course, delivered in partnership with City, University of London, offered students a unique opportunity to delve into the challenges and possibilities of human habitation on the Red Planet. Students were immersed in various hands-on activities, from building rockets to conducting experiments on the human heart.

On the first day, students were introduced to the concept of space exploration through a simulated Mars landing exercise. They had to prioritise survival equipment and compare their choices to NASA's recommendations. The day finished with a hands-on rocket-building session, where students used recycled materials to construct and launch miniature rockets.

On the second day, the focus shifted to biomedical engineering. Students learned about the human heart and its function, and then assembled Arduino boards with pulse sensors to measure their heart rates. By analysing the data, students evaluated the potential health implications of living on Mars.

On the final day of the course, students explored the world of computing. Students learned about binary code, error correction, and reversibility. They were also introduced to quantum computing and its potential applications.

We were delighted to see the enthusiasm and creativity that our students demonstrated throughout the course. Their innovative ideas and practical skills are a testament to the value of our Summer of STEM programme.

As a Trust dedicated to inspiring young people to pursue careers in engineering and technology, we believe that experiences like this are essential to fostering the next generation of innovators and explorers. We are committed to providing opportunities for young people to develop their skills and reach their full potential.
