FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are the eligibility requirements for schools?+
To get a place on Coding Success this year, your school must be a non-selective state school, in England, Wales, or Scotland and not taken part before.
Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis against certain criteria to ensure a good regional spread and to encourage participation from a wide range of students.
As a teacher, how much time will it take?+
The training will be about 5 hours long, and each lesson is designed to fit in a 1-hour teaching period.
We estimate that an additional commitment of about 4 hours will be needed for preparation, administration, and evaluation
Is it really free?+
The programme is fully funded by the two partners - BAE Systems and the Royal Air Force - to allow schools to receive the kit, training and resources free of charge. Schools that sign up will need to attend the training, deliver a minimum of one project to 60 students and complete the programme evaluations.
How many places are available?+
There are 200 places in total. 100 are for primary schools and 100 are for secondary schools.
If your school doesn’t classify itself as a primary or secondary school, please get in touch – we may still be able to accommodate you
What do students get?+
- 2 LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime kits to explore and engage with
- 3 different projects to choose from, packed with programming content for all levels of ability
- Support in soft skills development
- Inspirational messages from the Coding Success partners: BAE Systems and the Royal Air Force
Do I get to keep the LEGO® education SPIKE™ Prime kits?+
Absolutely! If you and your group of students complete the programme, your school will own the sets. If you decide to not continue then you will need to return the kits to us (at your expense)
Is it suitable for schools in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland?+
The programme is running in England, Wales, and Scotland. The resources have been designed to fit the curriculum of each nation. Unfortunately, we cannot offer places to schools in Northern Ireland.
What age group / school years is the programme aimed at?+
8-14 year-olds in Wales, Scotland, and England.
The programme is specifically designed for delivery to primary school students (Years 4-6 or P5-7) and secondary school students (Years 7-9 or S1-3).
Does Coding Success support the curriculum?+
Coding Success is designed to support the curriculum in computing, science, and maths, in Wales, Scotland, and England. This means, Key Stage 2 and 3 in Wales and England and Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence for P5-7 and S1-3.
The programme also supports soft-skills development.
What do teachers get?+
- LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime Training from a LEGO® Education Certified Trainer
- Lesson plans with differentiated paths for younger or older students, or more or less able students
- Lesson presentations with instructional videos
- Technical support from Raising Robots
Can a school apply twice?+
Each school can only apply once. However, the kits and the resources are reusable, and we encourage teachers who attend the training to train other teachers.
Do primary schools and secondary schools get different lessons?+
Primary and secondary schools will receive the same lesson plans and lesson materials, and have the choice to follow more or less challenging paths. The coding language used in the lessons has the same look and feel as Scratch, using familiar drag and drop blocks which makes it accessible for all students. Students who are ready for an extra challenge can develop their text-based coding skills through a fun introduction to Python - giving even greater power to their amazing robots.
Can this be linked to the BSA CREST award?+
Coding Success is already accredited for the CREST Discovery award. You can download the CREST Discovery Passport from the resource bank.
If students fill in the passport as they complete the programme, at the end they can apply for the CREST Discovery award.
This is administered by the British Science Association, not Coding Success. Depending on your region, there may be a fee for the CREST Discovery award application – Coding Success does not cover this fee.
